Yes. This may be a great coming of age movie, and a great superhero movie but not the greatest spider-man movie. I’m not being stubborn here about the classic. I’ve seen reviews saying it is the best Spider- man movie ever. I can’t agree with that because the villain and some supporting characters are so underdeveloped. Tom Holland tries a ultimate spider-man style but in the end all we get is the Kung-fu Panda version of spider-man. It was fun in civil war because it was short but here he keeps whining about it almost every minute when he was Peter Parker. In overall, this is just another MCU popcorn movie. It’s entertaining as hell, good to re-watch on Blu-ray and keep it in your MCU collection. BTW, Tony stark was awesome once again.
One of the aims of the new Spiderman movie is to work the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Guest appearances by Tony Stark and his shell-headed alter ego, Iron Man, ease the process and succeed in a way a similar attempt with Doctor Strange didn’t. Marvel comics used to respect the different qualities of their characters and for decades Spider-man was seen as too much of an outsider to join a team.
Homecoming has Starke provide gee-whiz gadgets to Spidey’s costume. Not a terribly welcome development (particularly a thoroughly annoying back seat driving AI who gives Spider-man someone to bicker with but is just wide of the character). In contrast, I thought Rami’s idea that Parker produced his own webbing as part of his mutation was a great innovation. The risk is everything becomes an iteration of an Iron Man movie. But Spider-man has a large, unique cast of his own. Here we get the Shocker and The Vulture. Here, although the gags are funny, Spiderman: Homecoming risks blanding in with every other Marvel movie. Ant-Man got away with this …just about and not without its first director walking out on the film.
I wasn’t keen on the battle armored look of the Vulture, it reminded me too much of the Rhino in Amazing Spiderman2, but the character really was a comic book creation and couldn’t survive a literal translation to the big screen without appearing ridiculous. Homecoming works The Vulture into the Marvel Cinematic Universe via The first Avengers movie. Toomes (AKA The Vulture) is keen to salvage and use alien technology left on Earth by invading aliens.
